When she arrived at the Crawford’s Choice Café, she saw only a few vehicles there, one being Dr. Stevens’. She walked in and sure enough, he was sitting there, the same table as last night. She pulled out a chair and the waitress, this one being quite young and attractive, quickly approached and asked if she’d like some coffee. Dr. Stevens was already sipping a cup.

“Absolutely. That’d be great.”

“Good to see you, Lux. Are you ready for this?”

“Of course. Always.”

“Listen, I know you said that you wouldn’t go on this assignment without Ben but as you saw yesterday and can surely see now, he didn’t accept my offer.”

“Well, Dr. Stevens,” Lux said, lifting the cup of hot coffee to her lips, “maybe you didn’t make him a good enough one.”

There was a strained silence at the table until the tinkling of the bell over the café door broke the tension in the air. Jesse and Macy walked in and looked around. When they spotted the two at the table, they immediately moved to join them.

“Well, look at you two getting along like good little kids,” Lux said, giving the pair a sarcastic smile. “You’re late!”

“Now hold a minute, you bitch!” Macy started.

“Be quiet. I gave you two instructions yesterday and I expected them to be followed. There’s still a lot to discuss and plan out before Dr. Stevens heads back to Houston and particularly before I decide if I’m actually taking your sorry asses into these woods or not.” She paused for a breath and to sip her coffee.

Stevens took the opportunity to wave the waitress over. She poured coffee for the two newcomers and the doctor ordered breakfast for the table. With the waitress gone again, Lux continued.

“I reviewed both your files last night and I’m not impressed, to say the least.” Lux turned her gaze to Macy and said, “When we went in there the last time, I had one guy on my team who wanted to play C.S.I. No matter how much I told him to leave shit where he found it, he went digging for trouble; literally. Let’s just say what he found left him tongue-tied and no one’s heard from him since.

“Now come on, Lux, be fair,” Dr. Stevens protested. “We don’t know for sure what really happened to Dr. Smith. For all we know, he made it out on the other side of the bog and hightailed it for home.”

“Oh, shut up, Stevens. You know, for such a smart, rich guy, you sure are dumb sometimes. It’s better I tell them how it is now, while they can still back out of it, than we fumble our way into this and never get back out.”

A look of concern flashed across Jesse’s face and Lux decided to turn her attention on him.

“As for you, Jesse Keller. I don’t know what your deal is yet. There’s nothing in your file that speaks to your relevant skill set as far as this expedition goes; a photographer and a survivalist, who simply enjoys shooting in unpopulated areas of interest.
